Playback & DRM
Some movies use protected playback, such as Widevine or PlayReady. Requirements vary by provider and browser.
Turn it off or remove it
Choose your browser:
Safari — Mac, iPhone & iPad
Safari uses Apple’s built-in FairPlay protection. There is no separate Widevine plug-in to install or remove. Apple does not document a Safari setting to turn FairPlay off.
On Mac, Safari → Settings → Websites → Auto-Play → Never Auto-Play stops automatic playback. It does not remove DRM.
Brave — turn off Widevine
Open brave://settings/extensions, turn Widevine off, and relaunch if prompted.
Firefox — remove DRM components
Open Settings and find Play DRM-controlled content. Uncheck it. Firefox removes downloaded DRM components and stops downloading them.
Chrome — block protected playback
Settings → Privacy and security → Site Settings → Additional content settings → Protected content IDs. Set the default behavior to block protected playback.
This blocks playback; it does not uninstall Widevine.
Edge — block protected playback
Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All permissions → Protected content IDs. Turn Allow sites to play protected content off.
This blocks protected playback; it does not uninstall the components.
Protected movies may stop playing. You can re-enable playback in the same settings.
If a movie will not play
Use an up-to-date supported browser. Enable DRM through its own settings if the provider requests it.
